International Women's Day

Published 8th March 2024
Friday 8 March 2024 is International Women’s Day, and we recognise this important day by celebrating some of the extraordinary women who shape our community.

Each year, the Women of Campbelltown project collects and shares the inspiring stories of 10 diverse local women.

2024 marks the 50th story that has been collected and this year we have women from sports, business, community, health, arts and politics.

From next week, you will see our Campbelltown Library showcasing posters of the 2024 Women of Campbelltown, and you will also be able to pick up a copy of ‘The Power of Passion’, a compilation of the first 40 stories as told by the Women of Campbelltown.

You can learn more about the achievements, challenges, connections and contributions of all 50 of our inspiring women by reading their stories at www.campbelltown.sa.gov.au/iwd.

In her message of Happy International Women's Day Mayor Jill Whittaker said:

"The theme for this year's International Women's Day is ‘Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress’.

What does this year’s theme ask us to do? Why invest in women? Women are still dying at the hands of current and ex partners, equal pay is still elusive. Superannuation for women lags behind men's and women’s health issues, such as the pain of endometriosis which has been long been underestimated. Older women are the fastest growing demographic for homelessness. Investment is needed to improve life for everyone.

Investment in recent years focused on women’s needs as a result of women being in parliament;  Council invested in partnership with state and federal governments to build modern sports facilities suitable for women (and men). Is it over? No –  in Campbelltown there is a shortage of soccer grounds and women and girls miss out.

The next area of investment is a building to support people who are in the performing arts, their families and people who want to have entertainment in this area. This benefits women and the entire community.

On International Women’s Day we celebrate outstanding women in our community through our 'Women of Campbelltown' series with representatives from medicine, health, sport, housing development, entertainment, community, service and politics."

Campbelltown Council wishes to thank our sponsors for our annual International Women's Day event as we appreciate those organisations which are investing in women. Thank you to  Paradise Mazda, Davroe, Catlin on Magill, Mercato, The ARC Campbelltown, Claudia Callisto and Radio Italiana 531.

"Count her in. Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress."
