Neighbour Day and neighbourhood gatherings

Neighbour Day

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual campaign and falls on the last Sunday in March every year.

It is a call-to-action for all of us to reach out to our neighbours to help us all build better relationships with the people who live around us.

For more information and resources on Neighbour Day visit neighbourseveryday.org.

But you don’t have to wait till Neighbour Day to take action. Any day can be Neighbour Day!

Council can support you organise a neighbourhood gathering to help you get to know your neighbours.

Neighbourhood gatherings

Making time to gather your neighbours together to share some food and chat is a great way to get to know each other, particularly as our busy lifestyles leave little time for neighbourly connection.

You can host your neighbourhood gathering in your front yard, on your verge or in a public park.

Hosting a gathering

Here are some tips for hosting your own neighbourhood or street gathering.

Before the day:

  • If you are already friendly with one of your neighbours you may want to ask them if they would like to help you to organise your gathering event.
  • Decide on the date and choose a location. A local park works well or someone’s front yard.
  • Decide how many neighbours to invite (immediate neighbours, your whole street, your block or wider).
  • Decide the details you will need to include on the flyer (e.g. if neighbours need to bring their own chairs or a plate of food to share).
  • Draft and print your invitation flyer.
  • Deliver your flyer to your street and neighbours through a doorknock and letterbox drop.

On the day:

  • Welcome and introduce neighbours to each other as soon as they arrive. Some people are shy or lack the confidence to make connections themselves.
  • Provide name tags so everyone knows each other's names.
  • Bring items that will encourage games (e.g. cricket set, bocce, soccer/footballs).
  • Take photos to share (with permission).

Want to give it a go?

We can support your neighbourhood or street to host a gathering by:

  • Talking through your idea with you and providing tips.
  • Helping you design your invitation flyer.
  • Printing your invitation flyer.
  • Lending play items.
  • Providing a voucher to help with catering costs.
