Litter and illegal dumping
Dumped litter and rubbish impacts residents use, enjoyment and safety in our suburbs, as well as our environment.
Dumping or leaving excess rubbish on footpaths, verges / nature strips, next to bins and in parks, laneways, creeks and streets is illegal, and costs the community to clean up.
Penalties for illegal dumping
Under the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016, illegal dumping is a crime. Offenders can be issued with on-the-spot fines of up to $1,000, or if legal action is taken, penalties of up to $60,000.
Residents can legally dispose of unwanted bulky items by:
- using Council's hard waste service
- selling or offering items for reuse on online marketplaces and platforms
- taking waste to the Newton Transfer and Recycling Centre and paying for disposal.

What should I do with my excess waste?
Residents can legally dispose of unwanted bulky items by:
- selling or offering items for reuse on online marketplaces and platforms – avoid leaving out in the rain or hot sun on the verge
- using Council's hard waste service
- looking for local legal recycling or disposal options, visit the East Waste website.
- Check our ‘tricky waste’ page for specific items, or try ‘Which Bin’.
If you frequently have excess waste or recycling that could go in the kerbside bin system, and have good reasons, please consider applying for an additional bin.
