Tricky waste
Many items that cannot be placed in your blue, yellow or green kerbside collection bins can still be recycled carefully and sustainably.
Common tricky waste items are listed below. To find out what to do with other tricky waste items, check East Waste’s A-Z of tricky waste items or the Which Bin? website.
Batteries should never be placed in any of your kerbside bins. Batteries are made of hazardous substances that can cause fires in waste trucks and at waste management facilities.
Instead, please take old batteries to Council's TV, Computer and Household Chemical Waste Drop Off Facility for safe disposal. The facility will accept small devices and appliances with 'embedded' batteries – these are products that have batteries built in that you might plug in at the wall to charge them. For example, electric toothbrushes, personal massage devices, toys or shoes that light up or vapes and e-cigarettes. Please visit our TV, Computer and Household Chemical Waste Drop Off Facility page for a full list and limitations on size and weight.
Alternatively, visit the B-cycle website to find your nearest alternative drop-off location.

Many electronic retailers such as Officeworks, Harvey Norman and Bunnings accept e-waste for recycling. Learn more about available drop-off locations and accepted items via Which Bin SA.

Plastic and metal lids can be recycled when prepared correctly, helping keep small items out of landfill.
- Plastic bottle lids should be screwed back onto empty, flattened bottles so the recycling facility can easily separate the materials for processing.
- Steel lids should be collected inside a steel can and the top gently crushed closed once the can is three-quarters full.
- Aluminium/foil lids can be placed inside aluminium or placed inside a foil tray before being scrunched into a fist sized ball and placed in your yellow bin.
These steps stop little lids getting lost in the sorting process and ensure they’re successfully recovered for recycling.
Light globes can be recycled through the BackLight recycling program. Simply drop them off at Council’s free household TV, computer and household chemical waste drop-off facility or participating lighting retailers, Mitre 10, or IKEA stores for safe recycling.

Please ensure soft plastics are clean, dry and scrunched before dropping them off.
Soft plastics should never go in your yellow recycling or green organics bin. If you can’t access a drop-off point, place them in your red/blue landfill bin instead.
