Social inclusion activities
Participation in community life is fundamental to social inclusion for people with disability. This is where people with a disability can develop a sense of connection, belonging and value through developing networks, friendships and relationships in the broader community.
People with a disability have lower rates of participation in community life which can be because of physical barriers in the built environment, but also the social and attitudinal barriers which are more difficult to overcome.
People with a disability should be welcomed and included in all mainstream organisations and businesses. The perception can be that people with a disability want disability specific programs to associate with other people with a disability, but choosing activities based on mutual interest is more important than having disability as the commonality.
