Celebrating 50 years of Campbelltown Library
The journey began on Saturday 26 June 1976, when the Library officially opened to the public in the original Campbelltown Council Chamber building at the corner of Newton and Montacute Roads. From the very beginning, it was more than just a building filled with books. It was a welcoming space where people could gather, learn and grow together.
As our community grew, so did the library. In December 1980, a second branch was opened at Athelstone. Then, on 17 November 1985, Campbelltown Library moved to its current location at 171 Montacute Road, Newton, opening a new chapter and creating even more opportunities for people of all ages to connect, explore and imagine.
In 2010, the space was renovated and refreshed to meet the changing needs of our community, helping shape the library people know and love today. Since its opening, Campbelltown Library has continued to evolve its services, collections and programs to support changing community needs, but one thing has remained the same: the library belongs to the community.
Generations of families have visited for Storytime, borrowed their favourite books, studied for exams, attended events, discovered new hobbies, learned new skills and formed lifelong memories within the library’s walls.
Today, Campbelltown Library is more than a library. It is a vibrant community hub; a place where everyone is welcome.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the people who made it possible — our staff, volunteers, community partners and every visitor who has walked through our doors over the past five decades.
Thank you for being part of our story.
