Campbelltown Community Orchard
What is a Community Orchard?
A community orchard is an orchard that is not-for-profit and is being cared for by a community of people. Residents are invited to harvest and share the produce through regular community working bee sessions and other activities. It provides a way to share knowledge and horticultural skills and inspire us to think about growing our own food.
The Campbelltown Community Orchard
The Campbelltown Community Orchard is located at the back of the Reservoir Rd Reserve (playground) in Paradise and was established in 2016 by local people working in close partnership with Campbelltown Council. The Community Orchard is currently a Council volunteer program and we are working towards a self-sustaining model where the Community Orchard is run entirely by community, as initially intended.
The Community Orchard has up to 37 fruit and nut trees and also houses the Thorndon Park Reservoir pump house which has been decorated with a mural. The mural reflects on the past and celebrating the future of food production in Campbelltown. The Council worked with members of the Campbelltown Community Orchard to contribute themes and information to be incorporated into the mural, painted by artist Melanie Spurling.
Community Working Bee Sessions
Volunteers come together at regular working bee sessions to maintain and look after the trees and Community Orchard space. This involves spreading mulch, pruning trees, netting trees, weeding, watering, learning and sharing skills as well as food, fun and laughter!
Working bee sessions are held twice a month - on the third Sunday of the month, 10am-12pm and three weeks after on a Monday afternoon.
