Resilient Australia SA Local Government Award
We are now in the running for the Resilient Australia National Local Government Award to be held in November 2024. Wish us luck!
What is the Cool Spaces program?
The Cool Spaces program was initiated to ensure all of our community members, especially vulnerable groups, had accessible options to stay safe in the heat.
In March this year, over 300 residents accessed the cool spaces set up by Council at the ARC Campbelltown and the Library to escape from the extreme heatwave. Targeted promotion, catering, 'healthy in the heat' education, programmed activities and transport to and from the cool spaces were provided as part of the program.
Council have since endorsed allocating an additional $10,000 from the climate solutions fund to continue the Cool Spaces program over the 2024/2025 summer.
Why is the program important?
Heatwaves cause the highest number of deaths of any natural disaster in Australia.
In eastern Adelaide, climate change has meant an increase in extreme weather events and heatwaves. While heat can be dangerous for everyone, some of our community members are more vulnerable than others, including older people, young children, those with underlying chronic health issues or a disability and low-income earners.
How do I access the program?
We invite you to register to be notified when Cool Spaces will be activated again this summer.
