Media Release - Possibility of boundary realignment

Published 24th July 2024
Campbelltown City Council welcomes the possibility of realigning the Boundary with Adelaide Hills Council (AHC) to include part of Rostrevor and Woodforde, and the Hamilton Hill Development.

The suggestion for boundary change has long been discussed, as some residents in these areas closely associate with Campbelltown spending much of their time in the area. The residents will enjoy shorter distances to access Council facilities, seek and utilise local and prompt Council services and will have the opportunity to have a voice in decisions impacting the community they participate in.

Campbelltown Council welcomes the initiation of an independent inquiry by the Boundaries Commission to undertake this inquiry and is committed to an inclusive and transparent process to determine the feasibility and potential benefits of the proposed boundary adjustments.

On the map, the realignment makes sense as Campbelltown Council is local, inclusive, and adjoins the residents in these areas. Campbelltown Council is a thriving and vibrant council that takes pride in its commitment to listening to the community's needs. Residents of AHC are already actively engaged within the Campbelltown community, participating in schools, churches, the library, shopping, recreation facilities, volunteers, clubs and various other programs. Campbelltown Council values community consultation and believes in collaborative decision-making and recognises the best solutions are built when the community actively participates in the process.

Campbelltown Council is pleased to offer value for money rates that are lower than the current rates paid by AHC residents. Given the rising cost of living and increasing interest rates, the reduced rates will assist in alleviating financial pressures for families in these areas. The proximity of the area will also ensure Campbelltown Council can provide services in a timely and efficient manner. Quick response times, local services and local networks are benefits all Hamilton Hill residents will enjoy with the change.

The Hamilton Hill development directly impacts Campbelltown residents. Despite the Council's efforts to improve infrastructure, including wider roads and better parking, challenges persist. Increased stormwater runoff from the development requires efficient management, and Campbelltown is faced with potential drainage upgrades. A single authority managing these issues is essential to achieve better outcomes.

The independent inquiry by the Boundaries Commission will explore various aspects, including communities of interest, financial sustainability of both Councils, asset management implications, and the views of residents. If the Commission endorses the boundary realignment and subsequent approval by the Local Government Minister is granted, Campbelltown Council is confident in the development of a suitable transition plan that will be a win-win for both Councils and their communities.
