Let's get batteries out of bins

Published 31st March 2026
Electrical items and batteries must never be placed in your kerbside bins, as they can cause dangerous fires in collection trucks and facilities.

This month, batteries placed in kerbside recycling bins caused two East Waste truck fires in Rostrevor. Luckily, the drivers were unharmed.

These incidents are serious. They put first responders, waste staff, and our community at risk, and almost always result in entire truckloads being dumped, lost recyclable materials and costly damage to vehicles and equipment.

Batteries, including products with embedded batteries, can be safely disposed of for free at Campbelltown Works Depot, Newton Road, Campbelltown, as well as other nearby locations.
