Bringing people together through food

Published 21st October 2026
When the doors first opened at Magill Community Centre, the goal was simple: create a welcoming space where local people can come together to connect, learn, stay active, and have fun. Few programs capture that community spirit quite like Men’s Cooking and Connect.

When retired chef Tony first approached Magill Community Centre with the idea of a cooking program for men, he tapped into something special. Usually, it can be a challenge to engaging men in community activities, but within a few days the first course quickly booked out.

Tony brings a wealth of experience to the program. After starting his career as a pastry chef and baker and owning a bakery in Athelstone, he went on to teach at TAFE, high schools and private training providers. With qualifications in culinary arts, adult education and food technology, Tony now generously shares his knowledge and passion for cooking as a volunteer.

With two Men’s Cooking and Connect courses completed, and a range of one-off cooking sessions for the wider community, the kitchen has become more than just a place to learn kitchen skills. Participants are building confidence, sharing a laugh, enjoying good food and forming new friendships. Some attendees even put their skills to work by helping prepare Council’s Week of Ageing Well Lunch, and have become Council volunteers.

Tony will return for a third course in November and December, with a BBQ masterclass and a Christmas roast turkey, with more programs planned for 2027.

A big thank you to Tony for sharing his skills, humour and enthusiasm, and for helping local men connect through the simple pleasure of cooking together.
