Backyard pool safety

Published 8th October 2026
With summer and holiday season fast approaching, we’d like to remind residents about the safety rules and requirements for temporary above ground pools.

Portable pools pose a serious drowning risk to young children. That’s why state legislation requires that portable pools that are deeper than 30cm need to be fenced.

If your temporary pool is deeper than 30cm or has a filtration system, you may need development approval to meet safety and legal requirements. Pools under 30cm deep without a filtration system don’t need approval or fencing, but would still require parental supervision at all times.

If you have any questions about the application process or setting up a temporary pool, feel free to reach out to our Planning team at 08 8366 9236 or mail@campbelltown.sa.gov.au.

Further information is also available on the SA Government Pool and Spa Safety website or PlanSA for more information.
