Why waste it when you can recycle it?
All recyclable materials collected via your yellow lidded bin are sorted and reprocessed into new products.
- Paper and cardboard
Newspapers, egg cartons, magazines, cardboard boxes, envelopes. - Liquid paperboard cartons
Juice and milk cartons. - Glass
Bottles and jars. - Rigid plastic containers
Drink bottles, ice cream and yoghurt containers, margarine containers, milk and juice bottles, takeaway food containers, laundry and bathroom containers. - Metals
Tin, aluminium and steel cans, metal lids (contained), aluminium foil trays and foil wrappers (scrunched into a ball), aerosol cans (empty).
- Polystyrene foam
Takeaway containers, meat trays, packaging. - Soft plastics
Cling film, plastic bags, chip/biscuit packets. - Textiles
Clothing, bedding, pillows. - Shredded paper
Place in green organics bin. - Green organics/food
Place in green organics bin. - Electronic Waste
Dispose of these at a free e-waste drop off facility.
Recycling Tips
- Ensure all recyclables are empty and rinsed clean.
- Place all recyclables loose in the bin (don't bundle newspapers or cardboard or put your recycling in plastic bags).
- Keep recyclables of different materials separate from one another - e.g. do not place cans in boxes.
- Lids:
- Steel lids (magnetic) should be collected inside of a steel can. Once the can is 3/4 full, crush the top of the can to close it shut, then place in your yellow bin.
- Aluminium/foil lids (non-magnetic) should be collected together and wrapped in used aluminium foil or a foil tray. Scrunch together into a fist sized ball, then place in your yellow bin.
- Plastic lids should be left on plastic bottles. Firstly ensure all liquids are emptied from the bottle, flatten to allow more room in your recycle bin, then replace the lid.

East Waste collects the recyclables from households and delivers them to SRWRA’s Southern Material Recovery Facility (SMRF). For details of the recycling process please visit the East Waste website at www.eastwaste.com.au/co-mingled-recycling.

Why waste it when you can compost it?
All organic materials collected via your green lidded bin are turned into mulch and compost.
- Garden waste
Lawn clippings, small prunings, small branches, bark, leaves, weeds, cut flowers. - Food waste
Scraps and peelings, fruits and vegetables, egg shells, meat, bones, seafood (cooked or raw), dairy products, tea bags and coffee grounds. - Paper and cardboard
Shredded paper, post it notes, soiled paper and cardboard food packaging. - Pet waste
Pet poo and certified compostable kitty litter. - Hair and nail clippings
Human and pet. - Wood shavings
Pencil shavings, sawdust. - Tissues and paper towel
- Certified compostable bags
Look for bags with the certified compostable seedling logo and reference to "AS 4736".
- Plastic bags or biodegradable bags
Only use bags with the certified compostable seedling logo and reference to "AS 4736". - Gardening equipment
Irrigation pipe, hoses, pots, garden tools. - Rocks, stones, dirt, bricks or building materials
- Large stumps or logs
Organics Tips
- Line your green bin with newspaper and cover food waste with drier materials such as leaves, grass clippings or shredded paper to help absorb liquids and reduce odours.
- Remember the rule: "If it didn't grow, it doesn't go in your green organics bin"
