What is Speed Friending?

With the ABC TV show ‘Love on the Spectrum’ as inspiration and a local Campbelltown mum of an 18 year old son on the spectrum, the seed was planted for a new social program.

Speed Friending is a free social event for people 18 years and older who are on the autism spectrum or who experience social difficulties. Council’s Disability Access & Inclusion Plan consultation in 2020 showed that there is a gap for young people with a disability to engage in social opportunities that reflect what their peers are doing. This led to a partnership with Ms Denise Aistrope, creator of the Speed Friending concept and experienced professional working with people on the autism spectrum, to bring Speed Friending to the Campbelltown Council area.

How Does It Work?

The Speed Friending Committee, led by Denise and Council Staff,  is comprised of people with lived experience who plan and shape the events.

On the night, each participant has two minutes to speak with each other, through a facilitated process and in a supportive environment. Participants are welcome to bring a support person/s with them who can stay for the whole time and there is a Quiet Space in case participants need some quiet time to themselves. There is also a light supper and activities to promote social interaction too. The events are held at the Campbelltown Function Centre and supported by a team of experienced volunteers, with lived or professional experience.

More than an event, Speed Friending acts as a vehicle to bring people on the spectrum together, make connections, build social skills and form friendships.

More Information

If you are interested in attending an event or would like to find out more, please call Rachel on 8366 9353.

This area is critical for social inclusion of people in the Community.  This is where people with a disability can develop a sense of connection, belonging and value through developing networks, friendships and relationships in the broader community.

People with a disability have lower rates of participation in community life which can be because of physical barriers in the built environment, but also the social and attitudinal barriers which are more difficult to overcome.

People with a disability should be welcomed and included in all mainstream organisations and businesses.  The perception can be that people with a disability want disability specific programs to associate with other people with a disability, but choosing activities based on mutual interest is more important than having disability as the commonality.
