Weekly Green FOGO Bin Trial

On Wednesday, 1 May 2024, Campbelltown City Council and East Waste will start a 12 month trial of a Weekly Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service.

The trial aims to encourage the correct use of current 3-bin system by supporting our community to put food and garden organics in the green FOGO bin and send less waste to landfill.

During the trial, approximately 1,200 households and businesses in part of Campbelltown will have a switch in their bin collections:

  • FOGO (Green Lid) Bin: Will be collected weekly
  • Landfill (Blue Lid) BIN: Will be collected fortnightly
  • Recycling (Yellow Lid) Bin: Will remain the same, collected fortnightly

Current service for kerbside bin collection. Week 1 recycling and landfill. Week 2 FOGO and landfill.

New trial service for kerbside bin collection. Week 1 recycling and FOGO. Week 2 landfill and FOGO.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is FOGO?

FOGO stands for ‘Food Organics and Garden Organics’ and is the green-lidded kerbside bin at home.

If it grows, it goes in FOGO!  This means, anything that grows (or once grew) belongs in the green FOGO bin, most importantly FOOD!

Material placed in the green FOGO bin is collected by East Waste and taken to be turned into compost and mulch products.

Certified compostable and home compostable symbols

Only Australian-certified compostable bags and/or home compostable bags can be used in the green FOGO bin.

Please check for the compostable certification (AS4736 or AS5810), seedling or home compostable logo.

Biodegradable bags should not be used in the FOGO bins as these disintegrate into micro-plastics.

Learn more about compostable vs biodegradable on the East Waste website.

Benefits for You

  • Provides a more convenient option for recycling food waste, which is:
    • generated daily
    • the smelliest
    • often put in the wrong bin
    • the heaviest part of the bin.
  • Gives you 13% more 3-bin capacity (860 vs 760 litres per fortnight).
  • You are doing something good for the planet!

Benefits for Council and Community

  • Delivers a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable service than the current offering, matching the waste that a household generates.
  • Reduces payments of the SA solid waste levy and exposure to future increases in the levy.
  • Savings in landfill fees, as food has a high moisture content and this contributes significantly to the weight of landfill bins.

Benefits for the Environment and the Economy

  • Increases recycling of food scraps via green FOGO bins.
  • Lowers landfill volumes and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Supports local jobs. Composting creates 6.1 full time equivalent jobs per 10,000 tonnes of waste, compared to 2.8 for landfill.

General Trial FAQs

We would like to try a new and better way to collect waste meet the needs of our residents, Council and the environment. This service has proven to get more food and organics out of the landfill bin and into the green FOGO bin, where it belongs.

During this trial, we will test how it works logistically, how it impacts the environment, how we can save money, and if the community likes it.

We are hearing from other Council trials and rollouts that this change is going very well. We believe it will bring several benefits for both the community and the Council.

Throughout the trial, the Council and East Waste will monitor its effectiveness and suitability before deciding if it is a system worth considering for the entire Council area.

Landfill bin contents of a typical Campbelltown bin

A household waste audit was completed in 2023 by East Waste in preparation for the trial. Currently only 30% of the contents of the average blue landfill bin should actually be in the blue bin.

Of the remaining materials:

  • 60% are compostable material this can go in the green FOGO bin.
  • 10% are recyclable, this can go in the yellow recycle bin.

Currently only 15% of food waste is correctly disposed of by residents in the green FOGO bin. This means that 85% is being wasted in the blue landfill bin or contaminating the yellow recycle bin, which wastes money and can ruin good recyclables.

The area selected for the trial is in the suburb of Campbelltown on the Wednesday collection day (approximately 1200 properties), including households, businesses and Multi Unit Dwellings (MUDs).

The trial area selected is representative of the Campbelltown City Council area. It is one distinct East Waste collection truck run and contains a range of different types of properties including a mix of housing types, land sizes, owner-occupied, tenanted, small and large businesses.

Note, for streets on the edge of the trial; Atkell Avenue, Clairville Road, Newton Road, Gorge Road and Lower North-East Road (coloured pink on the map), across the road is not part of the trial, as this will be picked up by a different truck.

Participant feedback along with data and information gathered throughout the trial, will be collated and provided in a Council report at the end of the trial period.

We appreciate the support and keen interest you have in supporting the trial, however we are unable to expand the trial area outside area due to logistical challenges.  A Council wide rollout will be considered depending on the success and viability of the trial.

If you are interested in staying in the loop or volunteering, please contact us.

Trial Participant FAQs

Households and businesses in the trial area will receive a welcome letter and welcome pack one month prior to the commencement of weekly green FOGO bin trial in their area.

The welcome pack consists of a:

  • New kitchen caddy and sticker
  • One roll of 150 Compostable bags
  • Trial Information Booklet including:
    • a waste collection calendar
    • instructions on how to use the My Local Services app to view your collection calendar, receive bin collection reminders and view waste and recycling tips.
  • Information on how to use your kitchen caddy
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Tips on dealing with smelly waste.

Residents in the trial are also invited to join us at our Corner Street Meets and FOGO events for a chat and to ask any questions you might have.

If your property does not have a green FOGO bin or you live in a block of units that has never had a green FOGO bin, we are keen to work with you to make sure the 3 bin kerbside system is adequate for you.

If you have only a small space for bins or do not have a big garden, you can order a small 140L bin rather than a standard 240L bin.

Please contact us to discuss your options.

Unused kitchen caddies can be returned to the Council customer service desk at 172 Montacute Road, Rostrevor. Alternatively, email us at weeklyfogo@campbelltown.sa.gov.au to arrange a collection time. Please keep the trial information and roll of compostable bags that came inside the kitchen caddy as a part of your welcome pack.

Nappies and Hygiene Products

Nappies and hygiene products should always go in the blue landfill bin.

If you are worried about the smell of nappies or other hygiene products, try these tips:

  • Dispose of as much solid waste from the nappy as possible into the toilet before placing the nappy in the landfill bin.
  • Wrap dirty nappies tightly in a nappy bag.
  • Store your landfill bin in the shade.
  • Make sure your lid closes properly.
  • Place a small amount of odour control agent in the bottom of your bin to repel flies and odours. Use natural products such as vinegar, eucalyptus and mint oils.
  • Try cloth nappies and or reusable hygiene items, even for part of the time.

If you’re a household with children in nappies or have residents that have a medical condition requiring more landfill bin space, we can upsize your landfill bin. Please contact Council to discuss this option.

Pet Waste

Much of your pet's waste can go in the green FOGO bin:

  • Pet poo can be disposed of in the green FOGO bin loose, wrapped in a certified compostable bag or newspaper.
  • Only kitty litter that is made from 100% paper, sawdust, or is certified as compostable can go in the green FOGO bin. Clay, silica and crystal kitty litter needs to go in the blue landfill bin, as these cannot be composted.
  • Pet fur, hair and nail clippings can be disposed of in the green FOGO bin.

Yes! We would love to share your enthusiasm for the trial.

You can help promote the Weekly Green FOGO Bin Trial as a ‘Binfluencer’ and tell your story with others, or help us with the trial as a volunteer. Contact us to have a chat about this.

The Weekly Green FOGO Bin Trial will provide an additional 240 litres of capacity for organics per week. If this is now adequate for your needs and you no longer require an additional bin service, please contact us.

We'd love for you to give the trial a go and we're here to support you through the trial. We recognise that not all households are the same, that's why we have provided choice and flexibility for those who give the trial a go. If after a few weeks, you find that you have capacity or other concerns, please contact us, so that we can work out a solution for you.

One option is that we can upsize your landfill bin from 140L to 240L at no cost to you. This has shown in other trials to address most concerns and allow participants to remain on the weekly green FOGO bin service.

If you really don't think this trial is for you right now, you can choose to ‘opt-out’ and remain on the standard service (weekly landfill, fortnightly green organic and fortnightly recycling collections).  However, you can choose to join back again later!

Business FAQs

Yes! The Weekly Green FOGO Bin Trial includes all properties, including businesses and community organisations (i.e. churches, not for profits).

Businesses already on the Council kerbside service will have the same opportunities as residents to be involved in the trial.

As a business, you may be entitled to a green FOGO bin if you don’t already have one. If you’re a business in the trial area without a green FOGO bin collection, please contact us to discuss your options.

All landfill bins within the trial area will be collected fortnightly. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Yes. Our friendly education staff from Council and East Waste can visit your premises to deliver training and support you.

Please call us to enquire.

We understand that some businesses will generate very little food and organic waste and may not have the space to store a green FOGO bin. If this relates to you or you have other concerns, please give us a call or email us, so we can work out a solution that best suits your business.
