Neighbourhood BBQ's

Since 2012 Campbelltown Council has been running Neighbourhood BBQ’s during daylight savings hours (October – March).

Council holds Neighbourhood BBQ's in parks and reserves across the Council area.  The BBQs are held on Wednesday nights from 5.30 – 7.00pm and people in the vicinity of the park are invited to come along and enjoy a healthy BBQ dinner, meet their neighbours and have a general chat about their neighbourhood.

Notification of each BBQ is by letterbox drop. Look out for your invitation when we visit a park near you!

Organise Your Own Neighbourhood BBQ

Our Neighbourhood BBQs are a lot of fun and a great way for people to connect and in some cases reconnect.

What we know from talking to people is that knowing your neighbours can make you feel safer, feel more connected and feel like you belong.

You don’t have to be best buddies – as one person said ‘we don’t live in each others pockets but I know that if I need something they are there’ - but knowing your neighbour’s name and giving a friendly wave and hello is a great start to building good relationships.

Council loves to hear where neighbours and streets really get along and we encourage Neighbourhood BBQ’s as a great way to get to know the people in your street.

Be Inspired

Hosting your own Neighbourhood or Street Gathering

If you would like to organise a Neighbourhood BBQ for your own street - here are some tips to get you started

Before the Day

  • Decide on the date and choose a location – a local park works well or someone’s front yard
  • Decide how many neighbours to invite (just your own street or wider)
  • Draw up a flyer and print it out – download ours template.
  • Decide on the best way to invite your neighbours - door-knocking adds a nice personal touch or you could pop the invitation in their letterbox.

On the Day

  • If everyone brings a dish of food to share or something for the BBQ it makes catering easier
  • Introduce people to each other as soon as they arrive – name tags (sticky labels) with neighbours first names and street number or street name is a good idea
  • Bring items that will encourage games (cricket set, bocce, soccer/footballs) – Council has a some play items you can borrow
  • Take some photos to share (with permission).

Want to give it a go?

Council can support your neighbourhood or street by:

  • printing your invitations
  • provide a voucher to help with catering costs
  • talk through your idea with you and provide tips
  • loan play equipment
