Newton Community Garden

The Newton Community Garden is now well under way!

With the support of Council, community members have started establishing the community garden at Playford Road Reserve, Newton with the vision to “establish and maintain a community garden for the community to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and other plants in a sustainable way”.

In late 2020 Council consulted all the residents of Newton to see if there was community interest in having a community garden in Newton. Every household in Newton received a survey and neighbours living near a potential site were also doorknocked for face-to-face discussions.

At a community meeting in February 2021, a site was voted on and a Community Working Group was set up to make it all happen.

Council provided an initial grant to get the garden started and staff worked with the Working Group over an 18 month period to support them on their journey to incorporation and to plan their community garden space.

The Rotary Club of Campbelltown have been supporting the initiative from the beginning, sponsoring a rainwater tank and being involved in hands-on activities. Community gardening guru, Mr Alan Shepard, has generously assisted the group, sharing his skills and knowledge and assisting with working bee sessions.

The Newton Community Garden is now run by its own independent Management Committee, and Council continue to support their activities to build the garden.

Get Involved

The Newton Community Garden is open to all members of the community to get involved in establishing the garden by helping to build communal raised beds, landscaping, setting up member garden beds and other garden activities.

Becoming a member provides access to workshops and informative talks, working bee sessions and other garden get-togethers. Annual membership is $30 for individuals and $50 for a family.

Working bee sessions are held fortnightly on a Saturday, 10am – 12noon.
