What is the Vision for the Linear Park?

The River Torrens Linear Park is a multi-functional, regional open space corridor linking the Adelaide foothills to the coast. Its role in flood mitigation and stormwater management blends seamlessly with its function as a recreational asset and network for biodiversity. It provides respite from the otherwise highly developed urban environment, with ease of access to a range of recreational experiences at different points along its length. The shared use path will be a prominent and well used recreational element, encouraging people to travel longer distances and enjoy the resultant health benefits without compromising key areas of biodiversity value.

Through public and private partnerships, the 9 metropolitan councils that border the Park will manage and improve recreational facilities along its length, to meet evolving and diverse community needs and managing the assets sustainably in respect to environmental, recreation and financial considerations.

Strategic Integrated Asset Management Plan Final Reports Now Available

The Final Report and supporting documents for the River Torrens Linear Park Strategic Integrated Asset Management Plan have now been completed.

The Improvement Plan and Recommendations developed provide overall direction to the Councils to help guide future investment opportunities.

The development of the Plan followed extensive consultation with the broader community through a community survey undertaken in September 2016 using Survey Monkey (see the Online Survey Summary for a complete analysis).

Over 800 responses were received, primarily from people living in the 9 Council areas along the Linear Park – a big thank you to all those who participated and provided valuable input and feedback.

What is the project?

The Strategic Integrated Asset Management Plan for the River Torrens Linear Park (the RTLP SIAMP) is a joint project initiated by the River Torrens Linear Park Coordinating Committee between the 9 metropolitan Councils that adjoin the River Torrens Linear Park. It aims to identify how the infrastructure and facilities along the River Torrens Linear Park can be improved in the future, and how best to manage improvements in an integrated way that relates to the availability of funds. The Plan is to be used as a reference document only and not meant for formal endorsement by any Council.

The project is being managed by the River Torrens Linear Park Coordinating Committee, through its Assets and Infrastructure Working Group. The committee has commissioned Tonkin Consulting in association with Jensen Planning + Design to prepare the Plan.

The Linear Park is one of Adelaide’s most significant recreational parks, and is used for walking, cycling, public events, fitness, play facilities and picnic / BBQ areas, and generally by people enjoying the beautiful natural environment.

Along the length of the Linear Park between the Adelaide Hills and the coast there are pedestrian pathways, shared use (pedestrian/bicycle) paths, boardwalks and bridges, public lighting, playgrounds, picnic and BBQ facilities, public toilets, car parks, signage, drink stations, and a range of seating, tables, shelters and other facilities.

Most of the recreational and transport facilities have been in place for over 30 years, although there have been many areas that have been upgraded or replaced during that period.

Who funded the project?

The development of the Integrated Strategic Asset Management Plan is being funded by the 9 metropolitan Councils that own or have care and control over the Linear Park.
