Street Play

Listen

Outdoor street play was a social norm 20 years ago but is no longer the case. Street Play is a community-led event which gives neighbours a chance to meet, chat and get to know each other, and for kids to enjoy uninhibited play.

Residents work with Council to close down their street for two hours to let children and families play in the street safely and freely. Through traffic is diverted and resident car access is allowed at walking speed.

The process is easy and involves four simple steps:

  1. Get permission and support
  2. Talk to your neighbours and set a date
  3. Tell everyone
  4. Enjoy the day with street play!

Campbelltown resident, Marian, recently held Street Play on her street. Here’s what she had to say:

“The beauty of Street Play is that it is yours to make your own. It can be super simple or as big as you want. The process was so easy and it was a wonderful way to spend a summer evening enjoying the company of our neighbours and meeting new people on the street.

Reclaiming the streets as a safe place to play builds independence, keeps kids active and encourages inclusion of all people.

Street Play is an opportunity that does not cost you anything, gets you out and talking to your neighbours and is thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, especially by the kids who are already asking about holding another Street Play event.

Given the ease of the planning process it is something that I would recommend that people look into!”
