Nicholas McShane junior (1861-1942)

Nicholas McShane junior was first elected to the Campbelltown District Council in 1903, representing Campbelltown Ward (now River Ward), at the same election at which his father, Nicholas McShane senior, retired. He served 1903 – 1936 (33 years).  Nicholas McShane junior also replaced his father on the East Torrens County Board of Health in 1906.

His parents were Nicholas McShane senior (1830-1908) and Ann Rice (1831-1870).[1] “[Nicholas McShane junior] was born at Campbelltown in 1861 and educated at the Campbelltown State School. He was a councillor for [thirty-three] years. He had always resided at Campbelltown and was a prominent member of the Torrens Valley Show Society.”[2]

Nicholas McShane junior married Lily Wilton (1855-1934) and they had five children. For most of his life, Nicholas’ occupation was as a fruit grower. He was sworn is as a District Constable in 1892 and 1895.

On his retirement in 1936, the press reported that “Mr. Nicholas McShane, who has represented Campbelltown ward in the Campbelltown District Council for 33 years, is retiring from the council. In recognition of his service to the district and the ratepayers, the members and staff of the council called on Cr. McShane at his residence, and presented him with an armchair. Cr. McShane served two terms as chairman, and represented the Council on various boards.”[3]

When Nicholas McShane junior died in 1942 he was living in McShane Street, Campbelltown and is buried at St Martin’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Campbelltown.
