Name Suppression

Name or Address Suppression enables at-risk individuals to apply to have their name or address suppressed within the Assessment Record* which is publicly available.  Address (but not name) suppression is also available for Council’s Voters Roll**.

Please refer to the following excerpts from the Local Government Act 1999 and Local Government (Elections) Act 1999:

  • Section 172 (4) of the Local Government Act 1999 – if the Chief Executive Officer is satisfied that the inclusion in the assessment record of the name or address of a person would place at risk the personal safety of that person, a member of that person’s family or any other person, the Chief Executive Officer may suppress the name or address from the assessment record
  • Section 15 (3) of the Local Government (Elections Act) 1999 – If the Chief Executive Officer is satisfied that the inclusion on the voters roll of the address of the place of residence of a person or the address of a place of residence or rateable property(as the case may be) by virtue of which a person is entitled to be enrolled would place at risk the personal safety of that person, a member of that person's family or any other person, the Chief Executive Officer may suppress the address from the voters roll.

*The Assessment Record contains basic information about every property in the Council area such as property details, owner’s name and address and current valuation.  Council must make the assessment record available to the public as outlined in Local Government Act 1999.

  • Section 174 (1) of the Local Government Act 1999 – A person is entitled to inspect the assessment record at the principal office of the council during ordinary office hours.

**The Voters Roll contains basic information about every person, body corporate or group enrolled to vote in Council elections.

  • Section 15 (14) of the Local Government Act 1999 – A council must ensure that copies of the roll are available for inspection (without charge) by the public at the principal office of the council.

Name Suppression Applications

Name suppression applications can be made directly through the State Electoral Commission SA for silent elector status by completing the form and returning it to their offices. Please refer to http://www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/special_category/Silent_Electors.htm for further information.  If you wish to have your name or address suppressed from the Council Assessment Record, Council Voters Roll and the State Electoral Roll, we strongly advise that you make your application directly to the State Electoral Commission SA. This information will then be provided to Council so that Council can suppress this information on its Assessment Record and Voters Roll.

To apply directly to Council for suppression on the Assessment Record only please complete the Name Suppression Application Form.  To be eligible for Name or Address Suppression, you must be able to satisfy the Chief Executive Officer that your safety (or that of another person) may be put at risk should your name or address be obtained by someone conducting a search of the Assessment Record or your address be obtained by someone perusing Council’s Voters Roll.  Your privacy alone is not a sufficient reason to apply.  Please note that if applying directly through Council to suppress your name or address the suppression will only occur on the Assessment Record and Council Voters Roll and not on the State Electoral Roll managed by the Electoral Commission of South Australia.  Please note that the application for Name or Address Suppression must be completed for each individual. Joint applications, companies, associations and other incorporated bodies will not be eligible.

Applications for Name or Address Suppression must be submitted in person.   In order to have your Application for Name or Address Suppression processed in person, it will be necessary for you to attend Council and speak to a Customer Service Officer. The form must include a Statutory Declaration.

The completed form will be assessed by Council’s Chief Executive Officer.  If the Chief Executive Officer is satisfied with the application for Name or Address suppression, the name or address will be suppressed from the Assessment Record and your address suppressed from Council’s Voters Roll.
