Mervyn and Hartley Ey

Oral History Project - Merv & Hedley Ey Profile

The Ey family forebears arrived in Adelaide in 1847 from Germany and the main land holding handed down in the family was on Section 807 a large section of land on George Street now known as Lower Athelstone Road at Athelstone. Twins, Mervyn and Hartley Gordon Ey were born on 24th November 1921. Their ancestors were Germans who settled in Adelaide in the early 1850s. Several generations of the Ey family have worked as market gardeners in the area growing cauliflowers, cabbages and onions and retired from the market gardens in with their brothers Clement and Colin in 1986. After they retired from their market gardens, they continued to work in an orchard until they were 76 years old. Merv and Hartley continue to enjoy time in their gardens, still growing some vegetables and they preserve fruit and onions.
