John Lomman
The Lomman family were early settlers in the area and first bought land on Section 335 in 1853. John Maxwell Lomman was born on 26th July 1931 to Alex Maxwell and Nellie Lomman nee Hunt. The family lived on Maryvale Road, Athelstone and bought nine and a half acres and leased another block which brought the total to 20 acres on the top of the Gorge cutting about a mile from the family home. John began working with his father when he was 17 years old. Their main crop was onions, and other varieties included carrots, parsnips and beetroot and in winter, cauliflowers and cabbage and tomatoes. The family finished in the garden in about 1971.
