Ilda Parrella was born in Cassano, Caudina, Province of Avellino, near Naples on 6th February 1931.  Her parents had a farm and Ilda had worked on it. She was 21 years old when she joined her husband Alfredo Cavuoto in Adelaide in July 1953 after marrying by proxy. He had arrived in Adelaide in 1951. From 1953 until 1962, Ilda worked on different market gardens on Graves Street in Newton for six Italian market gardeners and for Mr Pope balancing and raising three children.
