Crescenzo (Charlie) D’Angelica was born at San Marco Dei Cavoti in the region of Campania, Italy on 22nd September 1923. His father had migrated to Adelaide in 1927 and worked for Mr Packer at Athelstone until his wife, Diodora, and Charlie and his two sisters and brother arrived in 1935. He bought land on the north-west corner of Montacute and Stradbroke Roads and grew onions and potatoes. At 21 years old, after serving in the Australian Army for three years, Charlie married Pellegrina Tomaselli. They bought five acres in Gilbert Street in Newton and grew potatoes, beetroot, parsnips, onions and rockmelons. Charlie sold the land in the late 1980s. He still keeps chickens and a small garden.
