Historical publication produced for Council

‘Colonial Settlers on the River Torrens’ by Dr Roger Irvine was produced for Council’s 150th anniversary year. Council supported Dr Irvine to research and write the book and subsidised the publication costs required to produce the book.

The book provides an in-depth account of the first 26 family groups to settle on the upper reaches of the River Torrens, as well as a dedicated chapter about the Kaurna people who resided in the area prior to the arrival of Europeans.

The book is available for purchase from:

  • the Council office (collection only) 172 Montacute Road, Rostrevor for $39.95 (inc GST)
  • Wakefield Press (internet purchases)
  • Good local bookshops

The book can also be borrowed from Campbelltown Library or viewed at the Library Local History Room

Book Launch

Council proudly launched the book at a reception on Tuesday 12 February 2019 to a crowd filled by guests, contributors, Campbelltown Historical Society members and interested people. Approximately 150 people filled the Council Chamber to hear Dr Irvine speak about his inspiration and approach, and to listen to some interesting and at times humorous anecdotes.

Mayor Jill Whittaker was honoured to launch the book and provide a copy of the publication to Campbelltown Historical Society president, Mr Max Amber, for safekeeping at Lochend House. Mayor Whittaker also acknowledged the dedication of Wakefield Press and Mr Michael Bollen, the publisher for producing ‘a magnificent book’.
