Three of Arts: Mike Barr, Erryn Munchenberg & Glenda Parker

Mike Barr - Acrylic

South Australian based artist Mike Barr has a motto which pervades the intent of his work and that is – ‘it’s not what you see but what you feel’. An instantaneous connection with the mood of a painting is what he aims for, and such connections have been made with collectors worldwide.

His impressionistic style has been influenced by French and Australian impressionist painters.  He has been strongly influenced by the painting philosophies of several living Australian artists and has found that paintings that don’t tell all the story find ready engagement with viewers who complete the narrative.

Mike has won more than 80 awards in Australia and Internationally – with 20 best in shows including the coveted Victor Harbor Art Show Corporate Award in 2016.

His rainy paintings of Melbourne have been recognised in Maree Coote’s award-winning book “The art of being Melbourne” in which the history of Melbourne as played out through its artists. He stands together with Streeton, Roberts, Smart, Beckett and more in their depictions of Melbourne.

He is currently a columnist in the UK magazine The Artist and has written for The Australian Artist Magazine and US magazines The Acrylic Artist and best-selling art magazine PleinAir Magazine.

In 2021, Mike was invited by the South Australian Art Gallery to demonstrate during the Clarice Beckett exhibition, one of his favourite artists.

Often found painting plein air around the Fleurieu Peninsula with his artist wife Tina, Mike is also a Fellow of the Royal South Australia Society of Arts.

He has had exhibitions in the US, UK, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Erryn Munchenberg  -  Watercolour

Erryn is an Adelaide based emerging artist who paints in both acrylic and watercolour, with watercolour being her passion.

After a very long hiatus, Erryn picked up a brush again in 2017 and loves to experiment with different techniques and styles.  She has had no formal training, but has had some excellent mentors including Garry Duncan, Kathryn Schneider, Alan Ramachandran, Lisa Knill and Jacky Darcy.

Her art is based on the atmosphere and spirit of her the chosen subject, inspired by the wonderful colours of our natural environment.

She is a committee member of the SA Watercolour society, a member of the Campbelltown Arthouse and a past member of the Burnside Painting Group.

She has exhibited her work at the Balaklava Courthouse Gallery, the Campbelltown Arthouse and at her local coffee shop, Crave in Croydon.

Glenda   Parker - Pastel

Glenda is a regular exhibitor with Adelaide Art Society, Whyalla Art Group, The Royal S.A. Society of Arts, The Pastel Artists of South Australia and several service club-sponsored exhibitions throughout SA. During 1995 she exhibited in a three person exhibition at Lombard Gallery and again in a joint exhibition with Wanda Brabenec at Lombard in 1998.

During April 2000 Glenda exhibited with her niece Heather Dunham in Mildura Victoria.

Each year, through her involvement with Adelaide Art Society, Glenda has been instrumental in organising a painting “Getaway” for interested artists throughout the state. She organised painting getaways (2) for the Pastel Artists of SA which brings the total of getaways to 14. This has been enormously popular and is an attempt by her to bring metropolitan and country artists together each year for 5 days of painting at different inspiring venues. From her background of living in the country, she recognises the disadvantages for artists- particularly the lack of exposure to quality art exhibitions and tutors.

I prefer to draw/paint nature but if I can’t, I photograph or sketch. I do not favour slavishly copying every aspect of the photo but enjoy rearranging the composition or the mood to achieve what I want to say.

She is a very hands-on learner/teacher and has the ability to make any art look easy to do with easy instruction

Wednesday 10 May (1pm to 3pm)

Robin Hicks – Watercolour

My experience as an artist has been varied. I work in watercolours, oils, pastel, acrylics and mixed media and over the last few years have taught classes and workshops and give demonstrations in watercolours and acrylics. I also tutor in how to draw and paint a portrait of someone.

I have a passion for nature and the land and sea and so I love to paint it. I also like to experiment with styles and recently have felt it would be fun to try out a little more of an abstract approach just to allow more expression of feeling.

I have always believed that art is there to be seen yes, but to be felt, to move us in some way or to think beyond our usual space. This can be made to happen with any style but its always that extra something that creates this response for the viewer. I aim for it, and I hope my art brings people some joy and peace.

Thursday 16 May (1pm to 3pm)

Annemarie Williamson – Watercolour

I am a retired Graphic Designer of 25 years’ experience working on a vast variety of subjects.

An active member of the South Australian Watercolour Society Inc. (SAWS) member since 2013 and an active member of the Adelaide Art Society since 2014.

The richness of watercolour and the natural flow and integration of colours inspires my art works, delighting me with how it tends to keep painting itself, even as it dries.

Coming from a Graphic Design background has forced me to explore a diverse subject matter and set me on a path of ever-changing styles. This allows me to experiment with loose, realist, abstract and everything in between.

I have learnt a great deal through teaching this medium and sharing my techniques with others.

‘When I paint a day goes by in a minute.’

Friday 12 May (1pm to 3pm)

Amy Hamlyn - Acrylics

Amy is an abstract artist from Adelaide. Acrylic paint is her favourite medium, but she explores other mixed media through her work. Amy is self-taught and has been exhibiting since 2021 when art became her full-time career. Her art is bold, colourful and draws the viewer in. She processes her emotions on the canvas, with the mark making and shapes depicting the trauma she has suffered.

As an artist, Amy is a strong advocate for art education, particularly for children, as art is a positive way to process big feelings and to express themselves in a creative way.

Saturday 18 May (1pm to 3pm)

Nikki Carabetta-Baugh – Aboriginal Dot Painting

I am an Adelaide-based Aboriginal artist with Yamaji and Brinkin/ Ngangikurrunggurr heritage. I do traditional dot paintings using modern techniques and materials. It is a way for me to share my culture with others and to educate non-indigenous Australians on the many issues facing my people, it is also a way of sharing my culture with others and reflect upon my personal journey, Aboriginal identity, and political issues pertinent to Aboriginal people today. It allows the viewer to appreciate just how difficult dot painting is and also to appreciate the layers of story in each painting.
