Water. The Original Cool Drink.

Remember water?

Cool, fresh water used to be a favourite drink for kids. But nowadays, there is so much choice in drinks and many are quite unhealthy. Water. The Original Cool Drink reminds us that plain water is a great drink choice for you and your family.

Replacing sweetened drinks with plain tap water can reduce the risk of tooth decay and assist with avoiding excess weight gain.

Ten tips for getting kids to drink more water (and save you money)

  1. Provide water or milk with all meals and snacks
  2. Always have a jug of fresh tap water on the bench
  3. Teach kids to help themselves to water, but to ask for other drinks
  4. Add ice or straws to the water for crunch and fun
  5. Buy refillable water bottles for your kids to take to school
  6. Pack water for outings so you don’t need to buy drinks
  7. Reduce temptation by not having sugary drinks in the house, except for special occasions
  8. Lead by example – make water your drink of choice
  9. As a family, plan what you’ll do with all the money you save
  10. Keep trying – changes take time, but the health of your children is a great reward.

What is the OPAL Healthy Brekky theme?

Peel, Pour, Pop encourages children, young people and families to choose a nutritious breakfast every day. A healthy brekky provides a great start to the morning and helps kids’ learning and concentration during the day. It also provides plenty of vitamins and minerals or kids need for a healthy body:

  • Offer a few healthy choices kids can choose from so they  can build independence while still getting a healthy brekky, no matter which healthy option they choose!
  • Involve kids by allowing them to help prepare breakfast with tasks they can manage safely such as pouring out cereal or spooning yoghurt
  • Encourage kids to eat brekky at the table, not in front of TV or screen
  • Make extra time for brekky by getting school lunchboxes ready the night before – kids can help with this too
So what is a healthy brekky?

OPAL roundel 3When it comes to cereals it can be confusing to choose a healthy one with all the clever marketing. Some cereals contain a lot of added sugar. Look for wholegrain cereals with low sugar, low salt and high fibre. Some great options include:

  • Wheat biscuits such as Weet-Bix, Vita Brits or homebrand wheat biscuits
  • Porridge made from plain rolled oats or quick cooking oats
  • Kellogg’s Sultana Bran or Mini-Wheats 
  • Uncle Toby’s Weeties

  • Plain or toasted wholegrain or fruit bread
  • Fresh, frozen or tinned fruit in natural juice
  • Baked beans
  • Eggs
  • Yoghurt

Life Looks Brighter Outside

There are lots of things to keep the family busy indoors but getting outdoors is where the real adventure begins. Kids love playing outside and sometimes all they need is the opportunity to get out there.

Give your kids an outdoor boost

Playing outdoors in nature is important for children, just like food and sleep. Kids that have the opportunity to play outdoors are:

  • fitter
  • stronger
  • more co-ordinated

 It is also good for their brains, it helps improve:

  • learning
  • concentration
  • memory
  • sleep patterns

We all know that kids need plenty of physical activity every day, at least 60 minutes a day. Running, jumping, riding, climbing, chasing are great ways for kids to be physically active. Your local park or playground provides a great space to be active. The kids will be having so much fun they won’t think of it as exercise. Allow kids to get messy, meet up with other kids, make choices, decide on their own rules and create an adventure to remember.

Need some outdoor inspiration?

Try these out with your kids today:

  • roll down a really big hill at the park
  • build a fort out of sticks and branches at your local park
  • fly a kite at your local oval
  • hunt for bugs
  • take a bike ride along your local bike path
  • play chasey or hide and seek in and out of trees in the park
  • skim stones in a creek or at the beach
  • soar on a swing or slide down a slippery dip at the local playground.

What do you need to get started?

Time! Time is the biggest barrier to getting in to the great outdoors, so how do we get more time?

  • Get together with friends or family at the park instead of at your house
  • Share the load; take it in turns with family or friends to take each other’s kids to the park
  • Hold your mothers meetings at the park rather than at the café and enjoy a healthy picnic while you are there
  • During summer make the most of daylight saving and plan for outings after dinner
  • In winter, pull on the raincoats and rubber boots and splash in puddles and jump through leaves
  • Keep a ball, bat or kite in the car and take every oppor tunity to explore new parks, playgrounds and walking trails when you are out and about.

OPAL Campbelltown will be running a range of programs and services to support the campaign. These include;

-       Geocaching workshops and GPS units available from the Campbelltown Library

Think Feet First

Think Feet First - step, cycle, scoot to school

‘Think Feet First – step, cycle, scoot to school’ is the current theme for the OPAL Program in Campbelltown City Council. 

The message is to encourage parents and students to think about how they travel to school and around their community. The focus is on choosing active ways to travel to school such as walking, cycling or other non-motorised modes of travel. Being active every day is important for everyone and active travel to school offers an opportunity to incorporate additional physical activity into your child’s daily routine.

The National Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that children participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. However, data from the 2007 Australian Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey show only 32% of children meet these guidelines.

Physically active children are healthier, happier and more socially connected than children who have more sedentary lifestyles. Children who actively travel to school have higher levels of physical activity and improved fitness compared to children who do not walk or cycle to school. They are also more likely to be active adults, resulting in lifelong health benefits.

Why step, cycle, scoot to school?
  • Keeps our children and ourselves healthy
  • Builds strong muscles and bones
  • Improves heart health
  • Improves concentration and helps learning
  • Creates healthier and safer places to live with less traffic and less pollution
  • Provides a great opportunity for you to share time with your children
  • Gives kids time to spend with their friends
  • Helps kids to get to know their local neighbourhood
  • Helps kids learn about road safety

Most children, when asked, would love to step, cycle or scoot to school. They are often prepared to go further than you think, so ‘Think Feet First’ as often as you can and try to include active travel in your family’s day!

Busy mornings

Mornings can be a busy time, organising breakfast, school clothes, lunches and more. Involve the kids in helping out by:

  • Getting the kids to get up a bit earlier to help in the morning.
  • Having the kids help get breakfast and lunches ready.
  • Encouraging kids to pack their school bag, check their bike tyres and get their helmet ready the night before.

Find the best and safest way to step, cycle or scoot to school by visiting www.sa.gov.au/cycling to plan your journey. If the journey to or from school is too long, park so you can walk with the kids for the last 10 minutes of the trip.

Make it a habit
  • Set up some reminders to keep the kids on track – a note on the fridge or a reminder on your mobile phone.
  • After only a few weeks it will become a habit, then it will be part of the daily routine.
  • If we ‘Think Feet First’ for short trips we can all build a healthier community for our kids.
Morning catch up

Travel to or from school can be a great opportunity to connect with your kids about their day. Without the distraction of driving through the busy school traffic, you’ll have more time to chat. ‘Think Feet First – step, cycle, scoot to school’ is good for kids and good for you.

Staying safe

The more families and children that walk, cycle and scoot to school, the safer the community is for everyone. Less traffic around schools means less pollution at the school gate and safer streets for our kids.

Being active on the way to school is a great way to teach kids about road safety. Remember to reinforce the road safety messages of Stop, Look, Listen and Think before they cross the road. All children and adults can now ride their bike on the footpath and this is a great way for them to build their confidence before riding on the road. When kids are cycling or scooting, remember to ensure they always wear a safety helmet. Planning the trip, becoming familiar with the route, following the road rules and chatting along the way is a great way to ensure the trip to school is safe and fun too!
