TAYLOR, Family

Thomas Taylor was born in Honington Warwick England on 25 January 1852, and arrived at Port Adelaide with his wife Hannah [nee Packer] on 31 October 1883.

Hannah’s parents, William and Mary Packer, arrived the year before and settled in Highbury with their eldest son Nathaniel. Thomas and Hannah lived at Highbury and Highercombe and moved to William Packer's [Hannahs father] market garden at Athelstone in 1897. Thomas and Hannah purchased this market garden in 1900 after William died in 1898. Around this time Hannah’s brothers Nathaniel, William [son], George and Thomas owned or leased market gardens in Athelstone. Thomas worked on George Packer's market garden and in 1913 leased part of this garden. Thomas’ son Arthur purchased this garden in 1918 and it remained in the Taylor family until 1972. Thomas worked the garden with his son Arthur they grew a variety of vegetables and citrus, it is now part of the Athelstone Linear Park.

Thomas and Hannah attended the Athelstone Gorge Methodist church and they are buried in the church grave site next to Hannah’s parents William and Mary Packer.
