Leucio Varricchio was born in Apollosa, Benevento on 28 October 1933 and married Rita Calandro born on the 29 June 1937 in Apollosa, Benevento. The two were married on the 30 October 1955.

Leucio after having completed 2 years of National Service in Italy was looking for a better life for himself and his new wife Rita and decided it would be a good idea to try his luck in a new country. Before coming to Australia their first son Raffaele was born on 8 April 1957. Shortly after his son was born Leucio came to Adelaide arriving on 31 March 1959 on the boat 'Australia'. After seeing life was not too bad he called for his wife and new son to come and join him arriving that same year on the 'Neptune'.

The first few months were spent living with relatives at Goodwood and trying to adjust to their new country. After a few months they moved to Reid Avenue, Hectorville where they spent the next 18 months. While living there they had a new addition to the family, their first daughter Olimpia was born.

Leucio found himself a job at General Motor Holden at Woodville and later Elizabeth. This was to be his job for the next 39 years until his retirement in 1997.

Times were tough being in a new country, there was always a language barrier and money was very tight, so they had to grab whatever work became available. 

Leucio and Rita worked very hard most days working 2 jobs which involved digging potatoes in between their full time work to save enough money to establish themselves in their new country. Finally in July 1964 all their hard work paid off by being able to afford to buy a block of land in a new subdivision in Hectorville. They built their first ever new home, one which they have enjoyed ever since. Here they had another addition, their third child Silvio born in 1969.

Rita also held many positions, working at Manos Chickens, Rostrevor College and Loretto College until her retirement in 1995.

As time passed they started to enjoy the fruits of their hard work and were able to enjoy themselves. They were grateful for the opportunity of migrating to Australia and thus being able to fulfill their dreams and enjoy the rewards of their hard work.

Leucio and Rita are now both enjoying retirement, have married all 3 children and enjoy their 10 grandchildren.
