The English In Australia

Between the 1830's and the 1950's the overwhelming majority of immigrants to South Australia came from Great Britain, most of them from England. The majority of the people to South Australia today are of English origin. They brought with them Christianity, constitutional government, freedom of religion, speech and assembly, literacy and numeracy, permanent dwellings, modern science and technology, schools and hospitals, the English language, and trade unions.

The sports and pastimes they introduced included cricket, football, tennis, golf, athletics, rowing and yachting.

Within three generations of their settlement, South Australia and its sister colonies that federated into the Commonwealth of Australia had one of the highest standards of living in the world and one of the highest levels of personal freedom. As a result it has attracted thousands of people from every continent who wish to share in the way of life that was first brought here in the 1830's.

The organisation 'The English in Australia' seeks to preserve and extend the benefits this country derives from its British and English origins.
