SATURNO, Antonio and Son

Peter or Pietro Saturno migrated and arrived in Fremantle WA in 1921 and farmed in the Bunbury area, West Coast.

I, the son Nino Saturno, went to war with the Italian Navy for five years. On 25 January 1949, I left Italy and arrived in Melbourne Harbour on 15 February 1949. That's when I met my brother for the first time. On 16 February 1949, I finally arrived in Adelaide in Waymouth Street before moving to 179 Payneham Road, St Peters. I lived at Broadstreet for four years. In 1956-57, I built the first home on 429 Payneham Road, Felixstow. In 1987, I built another home at 11 Reynold Avenue, Dernancourt, Tea Tree Gully. I was 29 years of age, born 25 September 1920.

My whole family consisted of Maria Saturno, born 15 August 1926, two daughters, Rita who was four years old when we arrived in Australia (born 29 April 1945), and Gilda who was born 15 February 1949 (the day we landed in Melbourne Harbour).

The whole family arrived in Fremantle nearly one year later so my whole family and I met for the first time. I had never seen my father, A Saturno, before. Two days later, the whole family boarded a train back to Adelaide where we still live at 11 Reynold Avenue, Dernancourt.

Over the last 54 years we have lived a wonderful life. In 1956, the whole family became Australian citizens and we were proud to be part of such a country as Australia. God bless Australia, God bless Italy, and God bless my whole family and everyone on this continent.
