PIETROBON, Vito

Vito Pietrobon grew up listening to the stories his father, Gildo, had of working in a distant city called Adelaide. Although a happy time for the family of 12, Italian village life in Salvarosa (50km north of Venice) was harsh. So at 21 years of age, Vito left and came to work in Australia in 1953.

He laboured in the country as well as in the city and then began to work for himself as a cement contractor. In 1959 he sponsored his fiancee Rita Amabile Favarotto to Australia, where they were wed in 1960 in the St Francis of Assisi Church, Newton.

The home he built at Magill soon filled with three sons for him and Amabile. His commitment to his community was shown through involvement with schools, church councils, Italian clubs and often by employing new migrants.

Through his business, Vito built much of the road infrastructure in the Campbelltown Council and worked in many metropolitan and country council districts.

The Italian Chamber of Commerce honoured him in 1991 for his contributions to the Italian community in Australia. In retirement, Vito continues his community work, enjoys the company of his 4 grandchildren and looks after a healthy vegetable garden.
