MERCORELLA, Giuseppe

Giuseppe Mercorella was born in San Giorgio La Molara, Benevento, Italy on 8 October 1922. On 2 June 1947 he married Anna Scarino from the same village. Giuseppe left Naples, Italy on 28 September 1950 on the transport ship named 'Sabestiano Cabot' arriving in Melbourne one month later, 29 October 1950.

His wife Anna and two children Maria 4, and Pietro 2, joined him two years later arriving in Australia on 28 February 1953 on the new passenger liner 'Sydney'. Once in Adelaide Giuseppe took on any work available, his first job was with the tram lines.

In 1956 he purchased his first market garden at Newton, where he and Anna produced vegetables for the local markets. In 1958 their second son Antonio was born.

Later in 1960 they bought a bigger market garden at Athelstone and in 1970 they purchased more land at Paradise where they still live. All the land has since been sold for houses. All three children have married and Giuseppe and Anna now have 8 grandchildren.
