MARKWICK, Alfred and Ann

The ancestors of the Markwick family, Alfred and Ann Markwick originally came from Sussex, England. They arrived in South Australia on 8 November 1849 in the ship the 'Duke of Wellington'. They settled in Graves Street, Newton. The land was used as a market garden, the original home was built in 1850 and was taken down in 1967. Alfred was elected a member of the Council in 1873. His son Frederick William was the father of Harry Markwick, a fine Cornet player, who played in the Campbelltown Band. Harry Markwick had fifteen children, nearly all musically inclined. The Markwick family used to put on concerts in the community raising funds for various things. A family of this size and energy was a continuing strength to the Newton Methodist Church.

Harry Markwick dug a 105 foot well worked by a windmill on his property, he also dug wells for others. All in all the Markwicks gardened in Campbelltown for 120 years. Desmond Markwick now lives on the corner of the old property 152 years after his great grandfather first dug his spade into Australian soil. With 10 remaining children, numerous great, great great and great great great grandchildren, the Markwick family still goes on. The Markwicks are the longest lasting local family.
