JURY, William John

William John Jury (Mining Captain) with wife Sally and their 6 children arrived in South Australia from Tavistock, Devon, England aboard the 'Caleb Angas' on 16 February 1842.

George Fife Angas employed William John as a mining consultant at the Barossa. He was killed in a mining accident in 1847 at Paringa Mines.

Their eldest son, William Edward Jury worked as a miner at the Montacute Mine, and later left for the gold diggings in Victoria returning about 1855.

The Jury family attended the Payneham Methodist Church were William Edward taught Sunday School and was a lay preacher. It was here he met Mary Stephens Bedella from Probus, Cornwall, England. She worked for Judge Gwynne of Payneham. They were married in 1858 at the Wesleyan Church in Pirie Street, Adelaide.

William and Mary had eight children.

In December 1858 William purchased four acres of land at Hectorville on Glynde Road, allotments 21, 22, 34, 35 and their house 'Golden Cot' was built. Part of this land remained in the family until 1941.

Henry was a miner and worked on various gold fields in South Australia then joined John and Jabez in market gardening. Later he purchased Pt Lot 72 at South Street, Hectorville, working as a market gardener. He also owned Lots 27, 28, 29 on the corners of Hectorville Road, Glynde Road and West Terrace (Street) which was an orchard and almond grove. It was later mostly cleared and used mainly for vegetable growing for market. Henry's son Harris and his wife Ann continued with the market garden until the 1950's.
