JURY, James Snr

James Jury, son of John and Mary Jury of east Farleigh, Kent married Sarah Munn in 'All Saints', Maidstone, in 1834. They arrived in South Australia aboard the 'Moffatt' in December 1839 with son James and Sarah's daughter, Harriet Munn.

James Snr's occupation was innkeeper, farmer and gardener. The first room of their home on the corner of Sparks Terrace and St Bernard's Road was built in 1840. In 1841 a daughter, Louisa Fanny, was born and in 1844 a son, Mark.

By 1858 James Jury Snr had 16 acres on the north side of Sparks Terrace. Over the years they acquired more property and the land became known as the 'Jury Farms'.

The Jury's were highly respected, and were regular attendees at St George's Church, James Snr having carted water-worn stones from Fourth Creek to assist in its building.
