HUGHES, Jabez

Jabez Hughes was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire in 1804 and arrived in South Australia on the 'Lord Stanley' in 1850 with his wife Betsy (nee Peppiatt) and their sons William, Alfred and Henry. His occupation was Fellmonger and Landowner.

Alfred's occupation was Baker, Grocer, Butcher and he lived for a time at Athelstone. Both William and Henry were also in the butchering business. In 1856 Alfred married Mary Ann Headland and they had five children. The eldest, William Peppiatt Hughes, was born in 1857 near Athelstone.

In 1880 William Peppiat Hughes married Eva Gillard Nation and in 1883 opened his own butcher's shop at Magill on the site of what is now the Foodland complex. His genial disposition and attention to the wishes of his customers ensured a successful business. He served as auditor to the Campbelltown District Council for about eight years.

A plaque in the Magill Institute lists names of original members of the Committee of the Institute including W P Hughes.
