GOME, James Henry

James Henry Gome, son of Christopher William and Elizabeth (nee unknown), was born on 04/10/1801 in Stepney, London, England. James worked as an Accountant and Stationer in England.

In 1822 James moved to Gillingham, Kent, England where he met and married Sarah Harvey on 01/07/1822. Sarah was born to parents William and Judith (nee unknown) in 1802 in Shoreditch, London, England. Their religion was Anglican. They had eight children:

  • Sarah Gome born 1825 Gillingham, Kent, England. Sarah married Robert Catt c1846 (had issue) and died in England.
  • Emma (nicknamed Nim) Gome born c1829 Gillingham, Kent, England. Emma was christened 16/02/1829 and married Henry Catt, born at Newington Kent 4/10/1831, on 14/03/1853 at St Johns Anglican Church. Henry died 30/08/1876 of Typhoid Fever at Clare, South Australia. Emma died in 1874 in Clare, South Australia. They are both buried in the old Clare Cemetery. They had six children.
  • Lavinia Gome born 1831 Gillingham, Kent, England. Lavina married George Frederick Ind on 06/04/1854. She died May 1888 at Balmoral House, Campbelltown an is buried at St Martins Cemetery, Campbelltown.
  • William Henry Gome born 1833 Gillingham, Kent, England. William married in 1852 and secondly married Annie Simmons Smith Cramond on 28/02/1855 (had issue). William died 25/06/1914 and is buried at St Georges Cemetery, Gawler.
  • Henry Bryant Gome born 1836 Gillingham, Kent, England. Henry married Eliza Marriott on 08/09/1859 (had issue) and secondly married Mary Louisa Beasley on 27/02/1868 (had issue). Both wives died young. Henry died 22/09/1891 and is buried in the St Martins Cemetery, Campbelltown.
  • Henrietta Gome born 1844 Gillingham, Kent, England. Died aged 10 months in 1845 buried Gillingham Churchyard, Kent, England.
  • Ethel Laura Gome born 1846 Gillingham, Kent, England. Ethel married James David Beasley on 14/8/1873. Died 23/8/1927 at Marden, South Australia and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
  • Alice Florence Gome born at sea on route to South Australia 1848. Alice married William McGregor Paterson on 23/11/1868 (had issue). Alice was a writer about early pastoral life and published two novels; "From Saltbush to Mallee" and "Life's clouds with sunshine intermingled". Died 1928 in Glenelg, South Australia.

The family immigrated to South Australia in 1848 with six of their eight children. Whilst in Australia, James had residences in Hackney, Gawler, Campbelltown and Fullarton.

James Henry Gome left his wife before her death and married secondly in Hamilton Victoria on 20/07/1864 to Jane Greer Kerr, born 11/04/1843 Coleraine, Victoria. They had eight children:

  • Laura Jane Gome born 13/05/1865 Hamilton, Victoria died 06/08/1958
  • Louisa Maude Gome born 30/01/1867 Hamilton, Victoria died 22/04/1867
  • Andrew Thomas Gome born 23/02/1868 Penola, South Australia died 07/05/1868
  • Robert Henry Gome born 23/02/1868 Penola, South Australia died 09/01/1918 Ararat, Victoria
  • Edith Maude Gome born 02/08/1869 Ballarat, Victoria died 12/06/1951 Ballarat, Victoria
  • Edwin Charles Gome born 06/01/1871 Dunkeld, Victoria died 28/09/1962 Ballarat, Victoria
  • Emily Lydia Gome born 29/09/1874 Sandhurst, Victoria died 17/07/1882 Sandhurst, Victoria
  • Oscar Leslie Gome born 01/06/1880 Hobart, Tasmania died 18/12/1880 Hobart, Tasmania

James died on 12/06/1893, aged 91, at the Home for Incurables, Fullarton South Australia and is buried in the St Martins Anglican Cemetery, Campbelltown. His first wife, Sarah, died in Gawler, South Australia on 10/11/1872, aged 70, and is buried in the Pioneer Park Cemetery Gawler (previously St Georges Anglican Cemetery). His second wife, Jane, died 20/04/1940 Melbourne, Victoria, aged 97 years.

The Gome name is now extinct as no male lives in this family bearing the Gome name.
