Daniel Chappell was born 1821 in Oakham Rutlandshire England to parents Thomas (b.1780-d.1850) and Sarah Blackburn (b.1781-d.1876) who arrived on "Lady Bruce" October 1853 Adelaide. Daniel had a drapery business at 54 Rundle Street "D Chappell & Co" until 1866 with Frederick Sach and William Moore. Daniel bought "Alton House" at 122 St Bernards Road Magill in 1862 and lived there until he died on 21 September 1876. Alton House was demolished in 1902, the second one built 1890 was demolished in 1967. Daniel is buried at St Georges Anglican Cemetery and never married.
