BELPERIO, Vincenzo

Vincenzo and Anna Belperio Vincenzo and Anna both came from San Giorgio La Molara Benevento Italy. Vincenzo was born 17 November 1929 and Anna 24 January 1934. Both were from farming families.

They married on 28 January 1954. Their first son Giorgio was born on 1 December 1954. The young family lived on the paternal family farm in difficult conditions and with limited resources. Life was hard with little but work to do from morning to night 7 days per week.

Vincenzo decided to migrate to Australia like many of his friends and relatives had. He had heard of the opportunities here for those who were not afraid to work. Very limited money meant that Vincenzo went ahead leaving his young bride and 6 month old child behind. They joined him 3 years later in the country that the family adopted as home.

Vincenzo and Anna went on to have seven children with unfortunately their first in Australia being stillborn. Through hard work, including at one stage Vincenzo holding down two factory jobs whilst he and Anna also ran a mixed market garden, they raised and educated their family. All have gone on to lead productive lives.

Vincenzo unfortunately died from cancer on 31 July 1997. Anna still lives an independent life and still tends to her vegetable garden, delighting all the family with her produce, traditional foods and spirit.

Anna is the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren and she often expresses her gratitude to Australia for all its opportunities.
