ABRAHAM, Sarah

Elizabeth (Betsy) Barber Nurse and Isaac Abraham married in Norfolk, England in 1945. A long considered Nurse family decision was made by Betsy's father Edmund and two of his brothers, Robert and John, to sell up their properties and migrate to Australia. Consequently they, their wives and the progeny, apparently 15 in all, embarked on 'The Statesman' at Plymouth on 19 November 1849. Betsy, Isaac and baby Mary were in the contingent.

Upon arrival in Adelaide the brothers soon purchased considerable acreages in Norwood, Kensington and Magill districts and later Glynde. Betsy and Isaac lived at Norwood where their second daughter Sarah Abraham was born in 1855. Little is recorded of Sarah's childhood but at the young age of 18, Sarah married 25 year old Henry Isaac Ramsey of Magill in 1873. From 1876 to 1898 ten children were born: Fred, Roll, Henry, Bess, Katie, Madge, Dolly, Win, Cuth and Max. Sarah and Henry first lived at Magill, but with the extending family, Henry in 1888 purchased the Paradise bakery, store and residence.

The 'H I Ramsey and Sons' establishment was a landmark at the Paradise Tram Terminus well into the 20th Century. Sarah and Henry both died near 80 years old, leaving eight surviving children (most of whom married 'locally') and 21 grandchildren, with Sarah living to see her first great grandchild in 1935.
