Campbelltown City Council is proud to announce that in recognition of Mr James Marchant and his family, the Athelstone Community Centre at 338 Gorge Road, Athelstone (formerly the Athelstone Library) has been renamed The Marchant Community Centre.

It is Council’s understanding that for more than 100 years the Marchant family operated the store opposite the Community Centre on the corner of Russell and Gorge Roads and the area there was known as Marchant’s Corner.

Our information suggests that Mr James Marchant constructed the store in that location in 1854 and it remained in the ownership and operation of the family until at least the late 1960s.
