What is YAC?

YAC Group Shot 1The Campbelltown City Council Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a formal committee of Council and provides an opportunity for young people to discuss youth issues, make recommendations for positive change, initiate new projects and develop events for local young people. YAC members meet each month and aim to represent the needs, views and aspirations of local young people.

Campbelltown City Council recognises that young people are important and valued members of the community. Council has a long-tem commitment to listening to and responding to the needs of local young people.

A community consultation held in 1995 identified that Council should increase opportunities for young people. This resulted in the establishment of a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) which first met in May 1997.

YAC has since grown to become an integral and influential part of Council's operations, by recommending and implementing a wide range of events and activities in response to identified youth needs.

What does the YAC do?

YAC Group Shot 3The Campbelltown City Council Youth Advisory Committee aims to:

  1. Seek and represent the ideas, aspirations and views of young people and provide a local 'youth voice' to Council
  2. Provide recommendations and advice to Council on matters and decisions that effect or are relevant to local young people
  3. Increase communication exchange between young people, Council and the Campbelltown community
  4. Encourage youth participation in Council initiatives and strategies
  5. Promote a positive image of young people

YAC makes real decisions that impact on the young people in Campbelltown. Click here to learn more about the process.

YAC Meetings

The YAC meet the first Monday of each month at 6.00pm for a formal meeting.  No meetings are held in December or Janurary. A chair person is elected at each meeting and is responsible for running the meeting and ensuring that all members have equal opportunity to provide input and have their say regarding youth matters and agenda items.

YAC Membership

YAC Group Shot 2The YAC is comprised of a maximum of 20 people who hold a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience relevant to young people and local youth issues.

Membership is open for people who live, work or study in the Campbelltown City Council area. It is anticipated that members reflect the diversity of both local young people and the Campbelltown community.

Young Members of the Committee serve a term for two years* from date of appointment. Half of the membership will be subject to re-nomination each year allowing new members to join and to ensure an adequate level of continuity to the YAC. Any member unable to complete their two year term will create an opportunity for a new member to be appointed. Click here to find out who the current YAC members are.
