2018 Election Nominate2

Nominations for the 2018 local government elections open Tuesday 4 September 2018 and close at 12.00pm on Tuesday 18 September 2018.

If you are eligible to vote in your local Council elections, you are probably also eligible to stand for a position on Council.  With very few exceptions (such as being an undischarged bankrupt, or being disqualified from holding office by a court order), you can nominate for a position on Council regardless of qualifications, religion, race, gender, experience or profession.

So you want to be on Council?

The LGA (Local Government Association) is running early information seminars for individuals interested in standing for election on Council, at Local Government House, 148 Frome Street ADELAIDE:

  • 9.30am - 12.30pm on Saturday 28 July 2018;
  • 6.00pm - 9.00pm on Tuesday 31 July 2018.

The sessions will include the following topics:

  • The role and functions of a Council;
  • Relationship between Councils and other spheres of government
  • Role of an Elected Member
  • Allowances and expenses
  • Legal responsibilities
  • How elections are conducted
  • Eligibility and the process of nomination
  • Campaigning for elections

Council will also be running information sessions for potential candidates later in the year.  This information will be updated when session dates are confirmed.
